         Free Motion Feathering

Feathering can be intimidating, but once learned it is one of the most versital quilting designs.  It can be used as an all over design, in specific block shapes, as a beautiful focus in a plain area of a quilt and so many designs work for the borders.

This workshop will take students from the beginning shape to the accomplished design. Students should be familiar with basic free-motion quilting techniques as described in the Basic and Beginning Free-Motion Design workshop.

Class Projects

Students will be working on fabric squares that are layered with batting and backing. Once the squares are completed they can be sewn together as a quilt or wall hanging. These blocks will be a library of quilted feather designs and great to look back at to see how your machine quilting progresses.

What will be taught in class:

  • Basic Feathering shape and how to quilt it.
  • Single and Double Feathering
  • Freeform All over Feathering Design
  • Simple Marking Technique
  • Variety of Border Designs
  • How Feathering Fits any Shape
  • Feathering in a Curved Pattern
  • Feathering Circles
  • Feathering Hearts

This quilt is made using small blocks, the horizontal setting and the blades are 3 sided. Nancy G. created this quilt in a class at Sewing Cottage.
